Toolbars✎

Every bar in the tool, drawn, with what each button does.

Verified

Roswaal's chrome is mostly icons. Hovering one gives its name, which works once you know roughly where to look — so this page is the map: each bar drawn as it appears, with every control named underneath it.

Info

The three hardest to find:
  • Docs — the page icon in the mode strip, beside the mark.
  • Node Design — the palette icon, the strip's middle one.
  • Settings — the gear icon, last on the row.

The mode strip switches the tab you are in, and the box behind it slides to the mode you chose. The editor is kept as you left it — its tabs, where you were looking, the Code panel — so coming back is instant. Ctrl-click a mode, or right-click it, for a tab of its own. On a phone, where there is no strip, Docs and Node Design are in More, and the back button returns.

Info

There are two editors: the one roswaal serve runs, and the browser preview on the project site — the same build, on a project kept in the browser instead of your repository.
  • Every preview window is marked: a blue mark (yellow on the canary). If you see one, your work is in this browser, not on disk.
  • Otherwise the bars are the same. Where one differs, both are drawn below under a switch.

The editor's top row

Where are you working?

Floating along the top of the editor: the project and the open graph at the left, compiling and the other windows at the right.

Hover a control or its row to light the other.

  • The Roswaal markfar leftOpens the projects panel: your recent projects, the demos, and the other windows. Its tooltip and that panel say which build you are on, which any bug report needs.
  • Editor, Design and Docsbeside the markThe three modes, with a box behind the one you are in. A click switches this tab, and the editor is kept just as you left it — its tabs, where you were looking, and the Code panel — while Node Design or the docs is in front. Ctrl-click, or right-click, opens a mode in a new tab.
  • Projectafter the markShows or hides the cards on the left: Project and Variables. See The Project panel.
  • RefreshRe-reads the project from disk, node packs included.
  • New graphA new .nodescript: one Script, LocalScript or ModuleScript.
  • New node mapA new map of where things live in the DataModel. See Node maps.
  • The open graphIts tab, then its tools, both drawn below. A node map shows its name here instead.
  • Manual | DynamicHow generated Luau reaches disk. Manual writes when you ask; Dynamic writes on every edit. Also in Settings.
  • Compile projectCompiles every graph and node map in the project.
  • Compile scriptCompiles the open graph alone — Ctrl + S. With a node map open it is Write project file.
  • InspectorShows or hides the cards on the right: the selected node's settings, or the graph's own with nothing selected.
  • ExportThe project as a zip, or its place alone, as .rbxl or Legacy .rbxlx. Ctrl + Shift + E opens it too. See Places and Rojo projects.
  • Settingsthe last icon on the rowThe project's settings, this browser's preferences, and themes. See Settings.

The same row in the browser preview: the same buttons, in the same order, with the mark in blue.

  • The Roswaal markfar left, in blueOpens the projects panel. Blue means the browser preview: your project is kept in this browser, not on your disk — it survives a reload and it is gone if you clear the site's data. The panel offers a folder on your own machine instead, where the browser allows it.

  • Manual | DynamicHow generated Luau reaches the project. Manual writes when you ask; Dynamic writes on every edit. Also in Settings.
  • Compile projectCompiles every graph and node map. The generated .luau appears in the tree beside each graph, to read or copy out.

The web app's row held upright: what is used less folds into More. Held sideways it is as on a computer.

  • The Roswaal markfar left, in blueOpens the projects panel. Blue means the browser preview: your project is kept in this browser, not on your disk — it survives a reload and it is gone if you clear the site's data. The panel offers a folder on your own machine instead, where the browser allows it. The version is in the mark's tooltip.

  • Manual | DynamicHow generated Luau reaches the project. Manual writes when you ask; Dynamic writes on every edit. Also in Settings.
  • Compile projectCompiles every graph and node map. The generated .luau appears in the tree beside each graph, to read or copy out.
  • Add nodeOpens the node menu at the centre of the view. Right-clicking the canvas does the same, where you clicked. On a touch screen, pressing and holding the graph does the same, where you held.
  • RealignLays the graph out along its flow. With several nodes selected, only those move; a pinned node stays put.
  • PreviewThe Luau this graph produced, picked out of the generated file — P does the same. With nodes selected it shows just what they compiled to.
  • RefreshRe-reads the project you have open, node packs included.
  • New graphA new .nodescript: one Script, LocalScript or ModuleScript.
  • New node mapA new map of where things live in the DataModel. See Node maps.
  • DocsThese docs, your project's own packs included. Opens in this tab; the editor is kept as you left it.

  • SettingsThe project's settings, this browser's preferences, and themes. See Settings.

It floats over the graph in clusters, and the gaps between them are canvas you can click and drag. Left of the gap is what you work on: the project and the open graph. Right of it is what you work with: compiling, the Inspector and the other windows.

The open graph

Where are you working?

Two clusters on the editor's top row, after the Project button: the tabs, and the tools.

  • TabsOne per open graph, function, node map or Luau file, its icon saying which; the open one is lit. Drag a tab to move it; middle-click closes it.
  • Open documentsWith two or more openEvery open tab in a list, for when the tabs have outgrown the row.
  • Add nodeOpens the node menu at the centre of the view. Right-clicking the canvas does the same, where you clicked.
  • RefactorOpens the Refactor panel: Realign, Split into rows, A Get per reader and Share Gets. Ctrl + Shift + L realigns without it.
  • PreviewThe Luau this graph produced, picked out of the generated file — P does the same. With nodes selected it shows just what they compiled to.

As on a computer, held either way.

Its tab, and the list of the others. Add node, Realign and Preview are in More.

  • TabsThe open graph's tab alone.
  • Open documentsWith two or more openEvery open tab in a list, for when the tabs have outgrown the row. The way to the others.

Unsaved edits are a dot on the tab. The keys these buttons duplicate are on Controls.

The graph's settings

In the Inspector while nothing is selected.

  • ScriptWhat this graph compiles to: a Script, a LocalScript or a ModuleScript. Absent on a Lune graph, where every file is .luau.
  • Type checkingWhich Luau typechecking mode the generated file declares. Default writes no mode line; the other two also annotate the types of generated locals. See Types.
  • TargetWhat this graph compiles for. Lune is marked with a warning triangle: it is experimental, and a Roblox-only node is an error there.

Select a node and the Inspector shows its settings instead; click the canvas to come back.

With a node map open

The map's name where a graph's tools would be, and Write project file where Compile script would be.

  • The mapIts name. A map is a tree rather than a graph, so it has no graph tools.
  • Write project fileWrites the map into the Rojo project file — Ctrl + S. See Building and Rojo.

A node map is a tree rather than a graph, so it has none of the graph tools. That is the shape, not something missing.

The side strip

Over a graph: along the bottom with a mouse, down the left edge on a touch screen. Not on a phone.

  • Zoom inA step closer.
  • ZoomDrag to zoom. The percentage beside it goes back to 100%.
  • Zoom outA step further away.
  • UndoAs Ctrl + Z. On a touch screen, a two-finger tap does the same.
  • RedoAs Ctrl + Y. On a touch screen, a three-finger tap does the same.
  • FitThe whole graph, in the window.

The documentation's top row

Which copy are you reading, and on what?

Floating along the top of this window.

  • Docsfar leftOpens your projects and the other windows; its tooltip says which build this is. A warning sits beside it when the daemon is not reachable — the built-in library is still documented, your project's own packs are not.

A click switches this tab, and the editor is kept just as you left it — its tabs, where you were looking, and the Code panel — while Node Design or the docs is in front. • SourceThe repository. Roswaal is 0BSD: read it, fork it, take what you want from it.
  • Settingsthe gear at the endYour theme and reading face, kept in this browser. The same preference the editor writes, so a scheme picked there is the one these pages are in — and the icon alone, because a published page gives its width to what you came to read.

  • The markfar leftOpens the editor on your projects. Its tooltip says which build these pages were generated from. On a phone the page glyph beside it says this is Docs.
  • SearchThe search Ctrl + K opens, for a screen with no keyboard.
  • ContentsSlides the contents out over the page. Tap beside them to put them away.
  • Try itThe editor, running in a tab, on a project kept in this browser. No install and no daemon — and no access to a folder on your machine unless you hand one over. On a tablet or a phone it opens in this tab, and the back button returns. Wider screens have the mode strip instead.
  • Settingsat the endYour theme and reading face, kept in this browser. The same preference the editor writes, so a scheme picked there is the one these pages are in — and the icon alone, because a published page gives its width to what you came to read.

These are two different headers rather than one header pointing at two places. The window the daemon serves has an editor and a project behind it, so it offers Settings and a way back. The published copy has neither, so it offers the browser preview and the source instead.

The documentation window is reached from the document icon on the editor's top row, or at /docs. Ctrl + K searches it from the editor and from Node Design without opening it first.

Getting between the three windows

Roswaal is three windows out of one build, and each one can reach the others. On a computer none of them replaces the window you are on; on a phone or a tablet they take turns in one tab, and the back button returns.
